Mala is situated in the heart of the island´s cochineal cultivation in the Municipality of Haria. Cochineal is an insect whose female lives on the cactus, and which produces the natural dye carmine. Carmine is widely used as a colouring for a range of products including lipstick, sweets and toothpaste along with the drink Campari. Its nearest neighbours are the villages of Arrieta, Guatiza and Charco del Palo (a naturist resort), about 3 km away. Arrecife is approximately 23 km with a drive time of around 30 minutes. Mala is not a purpose built tourist resort, but more of a traditional Canarian town.
